The waffle is an essential and much-loved pastry. Waffles are generally made from a dough of flour, eggs, milk or water, sugar, yeast or baking powder, and sometimes butter or oil. The batter is baked between two hot plates, usually in a device called a waffle iron, to create a texture that's soft on the inside and crisp on the outside.
