March 25 is our favorite day ! It’s Waffle day !

Waffles are life. No one can resist a good waffle, sweet or savory. Halfway between French toast and a giant cookie, this pastry is a staple of European cuisine, particularly in Belgium and France.

Where do waffles come from?

But did you know that waffles have a rich and complex history? It all began in ancient times, when the Greeks and Romans were already making waffles, often with wheat flour and olive oil. These waffles were often served with honey or maple syrup, no doubt to wash down the taste of the olive oil.

In the Middle Ages, the waffle became a very popular pastry in Europe, particularly in Belgium and France. In those days, waffles were often made with eggs, flour, milk and sugar, and baked on a griddle over a wood fire. The inhabitants of the time soon realized that waffles were much better when they were

Over the centuries, the waffle has evolved into different varieties, depending on recipe, shape and cooking method. Liège waffles, for example, are a Belgian specialty named after the city of Liège. They are made with a batter of flour, yeast, pearl sugar and butter, and baked on a cast-iron griddle. The result is a waffle that’s soft on the inside and crisp on the outside, with a slightly sweet taste. Brussels waffles, on the other hand, are thinner and crispier than Liège waffles. They are often served with whipped cream, fresh fruit or powdered sugar, and are perfect for “pimp my waffle” fans.

Waffles are life!

But the waffle isn’t just a pastry, it’s also a symbol of conviviality, sharing and pleasure. It has inspired many artists, writers and film-makers. The most famous waffle character is undoubtedly Waffleman, an imaginary superhero created by American cartoonist Bob Kane in the 1930s.
